What is speech-language
therapy? Speech-language
therapy is designed to teach strategies and skills which help students become
more successful in the general education setting. Specific strategies include improving
auditory/reading comprehension, memory skills, expressive and receptive
vocabulary skills, verbal reasoning and problem solving, oral and written
narrative skills, and speech sound production. Is this service available to
my child? A child
may be referred to the school’s Student Assistance Team if there are
significant concerns noted by the classroom teacher or parent. If the Student Assistance Team recommends a
referral for further testing, the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) will
contact the parent for permission to evaluate. When testing is completed, a
Multidisciplinary Team meeting will be scheduled to determine whether
services are needed. If
services are recommended, an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) will be
developed to address the child’s concerns.
What can I do to help my child? · Speak to your child about what you
are doing while cooking, cleaning, shopping, etc. · Ask your child questions about their
environment (Where is_? What is_? Why do you think_?) · Model the correct pronunciation of
words, or the correct grammar in sentences by repeating what your child may
have said incorrectly in the proper manner. (e.g.– I goed to school…. Oh! You went to school!) · Read and discuss books together
